Project Gables - Cape Cod LTD Edition $65,000

Project Gables is a very special early-release TD5 90 County with a story to tell. Don’t be fooled by its rugged exterior—Gables is in excellent condition.  Having had just one long-term owner on a Yorkshire farm, she’s enjoyed a life of honest, hard-working service.

Vehicle Details

Gables is a 1999 Land Rover Defender 90, county. This vehicle was produced by Land Rover as a 7 seat utility vehicle. Fitted with its original TD5 2500cc 5 cylinder turbo diesel engine producing 122bhp standard. Permanent 4WD with an R380 5 speed manual transmission. Fitted as standard with hi/lo range LT230 transfer box that includes centre diff lock. These features helped push the Defender range of vehicles to the top of the pile of passenger utility vehicles.

Gables began her life on a quiet country farm, serving faithfully under her original owner. Years later, she was purchased directly from that very farm, her history and hard work still evident in every line and curve. For over twenty years, she was lovingly cared for by one devoted family, who spared no expense in keeping her in prime condition.

On the farm, Gables wasn’t just a vehicle — she was part of the family, playing an important role in daily life. Yet, that very work left its mark. When the time finally came for restoration, it became clear during the assessment that her story couldn’t simply be erased with a coat of paint or new parts. Instead, a decision was made: to preserve as much of the original vehicle as possible, keeping her heritage sealed within every detail.

Gables wasn’t just being restored — she was being honored.

Preservation is not restoration.

Project Gables stands as part of our Preservation Series — a unique approach that honors the authenticity of the original vehicle rather than rebuilding it from the ground up. Unlike a full restoration, preservation is about retaining history, not replacing it. Every mark, texture, and detail tells a story of where this Defender has been and what it has accomplished.

With Gables, we focused on maintaining as many factory-fitted components as possible. The engine, gearbox, and axles remain in their original condition, needing only fresh seals and fluids to ensure reliable performance. Each part has been carefully inspected and serviced, with particular attention given to areas known to require maintenance or that are prone to wear over time.

A Preservation Series vehicle is often considered the gateway into the world of restored Defenders — offering the character and charm of an original classic at a fraction of the price of a full concours restoration. But make no mistake: no corners are cut. The same dedication, craftsmanship, and eye for detail go into every preserved vehicle we touch. The difference lies only in the philosophy — to protect what time has created, rather than erase it.

The TD5 Engine

The Heart of Gables – The TD5 Engine

The introduction of the TD5 engine marked the dawn of a new era for Land Rover. This 5-cylinder, electronically controlled common rail diesel engine brought a remarkable leap forward in both performance and refinement.

The TD5 delivered a smoother and more responsive driving experience, with improved power, torque, and fuel efficiency over its predecessors. Drivers immediately noticed the difference — effortless gear changes, quieter operation, and a far more composed ride. It wasn’t just an upgrade; it was a transformation.

Beyond performance, subtle enhancements inside the cabin reflected Land Rover’s commitment to progress. Backlit dials improved visibility, a digital odometer brought modern precision, and new security features like an immobiliser offered peace of mind without compromising the Defender’s classic charm.

With the TD5, the Defender evolved — retaining its rugged soul while embracing the sophistication of a new generation.

Collaboration and Community

Project Gables was created in proud collaboration with Cape Cod's Gray Gables Market, whose founders, Russell and Erin, played an instrumental role in shaping the design direction of the vehicle. Their creativity, attention to detail, and deep appreciation for storytelling helped guide Gables from concept to completion.

Throughout the build, Russell and Erin shared exclusive behind-the-scenes moments with their audience, giving a rare glimpse into the craftsmanship, care, and collaboration that defined this project. You can follow the full transformation — from its humble beginnings on the farm to the finished vehicle — across our social media channels.

Russell and Erin’s passion for their home on Cape Cod was unmistakable throughout the process, inspiring the idea for a Cape Cod Limited Edition — a concept that celebrates coastal heritage, craftsmanship, and the rugged, timeless character that defines both the Defender and the Cape itself.

Beyond design, they also brought to the table a shared commitment to community. It was through their suggestion that a portion of the proceeds from Gables’ sale would be donated to Love Live Local, an organisation devoted to supporting small businesses, local makers, and creative entrepreneurs across Cape Cod. Their mission to keep local enterprise thriving mirrors our own belief in preserving heritage and craftsmanship for future generations.

We couldn’t imagine a cause closer to our hearts. Love Live Local has been instrumental in helping bring this project to a wider audience, and our partnership with Gray Gables Market has been nothing short of inspiring. We’re certain this is only the beginning.
